I spent the first 21 years of my life in the Garden State. A good 13 of them were spent waiting for gas attendants to get around to pumping the gas or concluding the transaction.
Never again.

I’ve never quite understood the not being allowed to pump your own gas.

Truth. I lived my whole life 6 miles from Philly, and I had never pumped my own gas until senior year of college.

There was a law brought up earlier this year to allow self service, it got no where. Im assuming they cited “jobs” being the reason

I remember working at Sunoco (formerly Mobile) and looking out the booth window at a woman staring in amazement at our gas pumps. She seemed so utterly perplexed and helpless to pump her own gas, and she came in the store and asked me how to go about doing so. I could hardly believe she was serious until I saw the New Jersey license plates on her Explorer. It never occurred to me that someone who drives a vehicle would not know how to operate a gas pump.

The first time i went to North Carolina we stopped in Virgina and I swear there were at least 3 people just starring at the pumps as if it was rocket science

What was the original reason to require a gas station assistant?

Last time I was in Oregon they had a similar law. Kind of freaked me out when the guy yelled at me for pumping my own gas.

Yeah, that first picture has never happened in all of NJ. Every stop I’ve had there meant waiting on a disgruntled attendant to finish texting his cousins, pull the idle pumps out of cars waiting to leave, and then come scowling over to my car, hopefully not spilling too much gas on the paint.
It’s nothing but politicians who don’t understand the difference between a productive job and an unnecessary one, trying to pander to another voting block.

According to the internet, it is “too dangerous”...basically my states law makers are as dumb as they look

I’m a bad person and usually pump my own gas if the place is busy. I’ll take the guy yelling at me over waiting 30 minutes

Well that’s why one of Elon Musk’s proposed supercharging stations has to have attendants. So when the stuff is new it kind of makes sense but laws need to keep up with safety technology.

I swear I’m the only one in NJ that grew up knowing how to pump gas.
My parents owned a gas station so from the age of 12 anytime an employee didn’t show up/got fired (frequently btw) guess who was in to work that day?
Me.
BTW pumping gas as a job - fucking sucks.
And if it makes you guys feel better, at least I hustled my ass off unlike a large number of gas pumpers from NJ. I move so quick with gas pumps that it STILL pisses me off how slow Michigan pumps are, I’ve got the grade selected, the nozzle in the car and the trigger pulled before the pump is ready, every freaking time.
That’s what happens when you’re responsible for filling 4 cars and keeping track of 4 credit cards/cash at once.

This reminds me that I have to drive borrow lots of 1950s cars with hidden caps and under-seat gas tanks to drive to Jersey for reasons. Preferably one target gas station over a period of weeks and months, kind of reasons. “Oh, fuck, it’s The Asshole again”
HEY GUYS: GUESS WHERE IT IS THIS TIME!

I agree. The internet has told me that law was passed in 1949...so

I HATE when they top off to round to the next dollar because they don’t want to make change. When it stops, it means the tank is FULL
Also, diesel is exempt from the self-serve ban.
DrJohannVegas
> dogisbadob
12/16/2015 at 16:59 | 0 |
Yep. Because diesel is non-flammable in normal gas-station circumstances, and the fun way the law is written classifies gasoline as a hazardous substance for flammability. So, it’s technically a public safety law, not a jobs law.
Sure.

I live in jersey and I usually pump my own gas regardless. I use credit for gas ( dem reward points ) and usually no one bothers me. I just give the simple “ I got it buddy, thanks !” and continue.
One time this guy refused to let me pump myself, I then proceeded to another station down the street.

DrJohannVegas

12/16/2015 at 17:06 | 0 |
Well, stars are technically gravitational fusion, which I guess is kinda like flammability. So, it’s for your own safety.

As an Oregonian I like it. But the attendants are fast, I rarely wait more than 30 seconds.

The first time I left Oregon as a driver I waited for 10 minutes for someone to pump the shit. The next time I was ready for it but didn’t think about putting cig out.

Since I’m a Jersey native, I know far too many people who can’t pump their own gas. My wife is one of them. She’s never really had to learn, and honestly going out of state to buy gas and teach her would be dumb because gas is cheaper here.
You can pump your own on a military base too. I always used to get gas when I was younger (pre 9/11) on Fort Dix. Provided you had a military ID you were good to go (had dependent card as my father was in the USAF Reserves).

Someone pumping your gas for you is such a foreign concept to me. My go-to gas station doesn’t even have employees, just a kiosk, 2 pumps, and non-ethanol 91.

Also applicable here in Oregon. It never ceases to amaze me how many people dont know how to work a fuel pump because they have never wandered out of the state and needed gas.
